Substitutieformule, often translated as substitution formula or substitution rule, is a fundamental concept in mathematics used to simplify complex expressions or equations by replacing a part of the expression with a new variable. This technique is particularly prevalent in algebra and calculus. The core idea is to introduce a new variable, say 'u', to represent a sub-expression within a larger one. This substitution can transform a complicated problem into a more manageable form, allowing for easier manipulation and solution.

For example, in solving an algebraic equation like $(x^2 + 1)^2 - 5(x^2 + 1) + 6 = 0$, one can let $u = x^2 + 1$. The equation then becomes a simpler quadratic equation in terms of u: $u^2 - 5u + 6 = 0$. This can be easily factored into $(u-2)(u-3) = 0$, yielding solutions $u=2$ and $u=3$. Subsequently, one substitutes back $x^2 + 1$ for $u$ to find the original solutions for x: $x^2 + 1 = 2$ implies $x^2 = 1$ and $x = \pm 1$, while $x^2 + 1 = 3$ implies $x^2 = 2$ and $x = \pm \sqrt{2}$.

In calculus, substitutieformule is crucial for integration, often referred to as u-substitution. When faced with an integral that doesn't have an immediate standard form, one can identify a suitable part of the integrand to substitute with a new variable 'u', along with its differential 'du'. This transforms the integral into a simpler one that can be solved using known integration rules. This method is a direct application of the chain rule in reverse.
