Substituní

Substituní is a coinage used in theoretical discussions of linguistics and information theory to describe a hypothetical mechanism for substituting signs representing referents in a discourse. The concept aims to model how text can be compressed or varied without losing coherence by replacing repeated referents with distinct substitutive signs. Substituní remains a theoretical construct and is not an established term in standard reference works.

The word substituní draws on the Latin root substituere (to substitute) and the suffix -ní, a pattern found in several languages to indicate a process or action. Mechanism and example

Substituní posits a substitution map that links referents to specific substitutive units. When a referent appears again, a substituní unit can replace the original sign, provided the substitution preserves referent identity and keeps the discourse coherent. For example, in a paragraph: “A researcher published a report. The author argued for a new method.” A substituní form might render the second sentence as “A researcher published a report. SUB1 argued for a new method,” where SUB1 encodes “the author.” Such use requires rules to prevent ambiguity and to ensure context alignment across sentences or clauses.

Relation to other concepts

Substituní is related to, but distinct from, ellipsis and anaphora. It emphasizes substitution of signs rather than omission or pronoun reference, and it has potential applications in natural language generation, templating, and data compression, where reducing repetition while maintaining clarity is desirable.
