Subsp. is the standard abbreviation for subspecies in scientific naming. It marks an infraspecific rank below species, used to classify populations that are geographically or morphologically distinct yet capable of interbreeding with other populations of the same species.

In botanical nomenclature, subsp. is appended to the species epithet and precedes the subspecies epithet: Genus species subsp. name. The full citation may include an author, e.g., Genus species subsp. name (Author). Subspecies often arise from geographic isolation or local adaptation and may reflect stable, heritable traits. In botany, subsp. is one of several infraspecific ranks, with variety (var.) and form (f.) used for different levels of distinction; the rank and boundary between them can be subjective and subject to revision.

In zoological nomenclature, the rank is also recognized and typically rendered as a trinomial, e.g., Genus species subsp. name, with the nominate subspecies bearing the same epithet as the species. Subspecies in zoology often reflect regional differentiation. The usage of the abbreviation subsp. or ssp. varies by publication and region, and many lists omit the abbreviation entirely in favor of a trinomial.

In practice, subsp. designations help document biodiversity and patterns of variation, but their recognition can be contentious, and molecular data may lead to a change in classification.
