Subarachnoidálního refers to the subarachnoid space, a cavity in the brain filled with cerebrospinal fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. This space lies between the arachnoid mater and the pia mater, two of the three meningeal layers that enclose the central nervous system. The cerebrospinal fluid within the subarachnoid space acts as a cushion, protecting the brain and spinal cord from injury, and also plays a role in waste removal and nutrient transport.

A common condition affecting this space is subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), which is bleeding into the subarachnoid space. This most often occurs due to a ruptured aneurysm, a ballooning of a blood vessel wall. Other causes can include arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) or trauma. Symptoms of SAH can be sudden and severe, including a sudden, excruciating headache often described as the "worst headache of my life," nausea, vomiting, stiff neck, and sensitivity to light. Prompt medical attention is crucial for subarachnoid hemorrhage due to its potentially life-threatening nature and risk of complications such as vasospasm, which can lead to stroke. Diagnosis typically involves imaging studies like CT scans or lumbar puncture to detect blood in the cerebrospinal fluid. Treatment focuses on stopping the bleeding, preventing rebleeding, and managing complications.
