Stunt

A stunt is a feat intended to attract attention, demonstrate skill, or entertain, often involving a risky or spectacular action. Stunts can be performed by individuals or groups in real life, in entertainment productions, or in advertising. The term also appears as a verb meaning to hinder growth or development, but that usage is separate.

In film, television, and live performance, stunts are usually executed by trained stunt performers and coordinated by a stunt supervisor. They are carefully planned, rehearsed, and supervised to maximize safety. Techniques include wire work, green-screen effects, harnesses, crash mats, controlled falls, vehicle jumps, and fire effects. Real danger is minimized by risk assessment, safety protocols, protective gear, and medical staff on set.

The modern stunt profession originated with early cinema and stage spectacle, evolving into a formal discipline with unions and guilds in many countries. Stunts are designed to create the illusion of danger while often relying on synchronized choreography and special effects. In popular culture, stunts drive action genres, sports entertainment, and daredevil challenges, though audiences should recognize the professional risk involved.
