Studiokanaal

Studiokanaal is a term used in Dutch-language broadcasting and media production to describe a dedicated channel associated with a television or video studio. It can refer to an internal feed within a production facility that carries live camera signals, audio, teleprompter data, and graphics to the control room and the video router, as well as to the export path that feeds the on-air program channel or recording systems.

In traditional broadcast facilities, the studiokanaal forms part of the facility’s video routing architecture, typically implemented with a video router and multiviewers. It allows the director and technical crew to monitor and assemble studio content before it is transmitted to audiences. The studiokanaal can be used for live production, rehearsal material, or pre-recorded segments that originate in the studio.

With the rise of IP-based workflows and streaming, the concept has broadened to include dedicated online channels used by production studios to publish studio-based content, such as talk-show episodes, tutorials, or live streams, under a distinct studiokanaal brand or program. In this sense, a studiokanaal may be the channel name within a streaming platform or the overall channel used for studio-produced material.

Distinctions: In broadcasting practice, the studiokanaal is generally not the final on-air channel; it is the production path. The on-air channel is the program channel. Access to the studiokanaal is restricted to crew and authorized personnel, though in some cases the term is used informally to refer to any studio-focused channel.
