Studienfach

Studienfach is a German term for the field of study or subject area chosen by students at a university. It denotes the main subject around which a degree program is organized and studied.

In German higher education, students typically select one Studienfach as their major and may combine it with a Nebenfach (minor) or elective subjects. The Studienfach determines required modules, lectures, seminars, and assessments that form the core of the degree.

The exact terminology varies by institution. Some universities use Hauptfach/Nebenfach, others simply refer to Fach or Schwerpunkt. In bachelor programs the Studienfach shapes content for core modules, examinations, and often the topic of the final thesis.

Common examples of Studienfächer include Informatik, Mathematik, Biologie, Rechtswissenschaft, Betriebswirtschaftslehre, Geschichte, and Linguistik. Many programs allow double majors or interdisciplinary combinations.

The concept is specific to German-speaking higher education; outside Germany it is usually translated as major or field of study. It relates to, but is distinct from, the overall Studiengang (degree program) and study regulations.
