Stroomtypes, a Dutch term, translates to "types of current" in English and refers to the fundamental classifications of electrical current. Primarily, these are direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC). Direct current flows in a single direction, maintaining a constant voltage. Batteries and solar panels are common sources of DC. Alternating current, on the other hand, periodically reverses its direction of flow. Its voltage also varies cyclically, typically in a sinusoidal pattern. The electricity supplied to most homes and businesses is AC, generated by power plants and transmitted over long distances due to its ease of voltage transformation.

The distinction between DC and AC is crucial in electrical engineering and everyday applications. DC is often used for portable electronics, low-voltage systems, and in certain industrial processes. Its stability makes it suitable for sensitive circuits. AC, with its ability to be stepped up or down in voltage using transformers, is ideal for power transmission grids. This allows electricity to be efficiently transported from power generation sites to consumers. The frequency of AC, measured in Hertz (Hz), indicates the number of cycles per second, with 50 Hz and 60 Hz being standard in different regions. Understanding stroomtypes is fundamental to comprehending how electricity is generated, distributed, and utilized.
