Streptozotocin-based refers to treatments or research involving streptozotocin, a chemical compound with significant biological activity. Streptozotocin, also known as STZ, is a naturally occurring nitrosourea antibiotic produced by the bacterium *Streptomyces achromogenes*. It is primarily recognized for its cytotoxic properties, particularly its ability to induce damage to pancreatic beta cells.

This characteristic makes streptozotocin a valuable tool in biomedical research for creating animal models of diabetes mellitus. By selectively destroying insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas, researchers can induce a state resembling Type 1 diabetes in laboratory animals, allowing for the study of disease mechanisms and the evaluation of potential therapeutic interventions.

In addition to its use in research models, streptozotocin has also been employed as a chemotherapeutic agent, particularly for certain types of pancreatic cancer, such as pancreatic endocrine tumors (carcinoids) and pancreatic islet cell carcinomas. Its cytotoxic effects target rapidly dividing cells, including cancer cells. However, its use in human therapy is often limited by its toxicity and potential side effects, including nephrotoxicity and myelosuppression.
