Streptests

Streptests refers to a collection of diagnostic tests used to identify the presence of *Streptococcus* bacteria, most commonly *Streptococcus pyogenes*, which causes strep throat. These tests are crucial for distinguishing a bacterial infection from a viral one, as treatment approaches differ significantly.

The most common form of streptest is the rapid antigen detection test (RADT). This test involves swabbing the back of the throat and tonsils to collect a sample. The sample is then placed on a test strip that contains antibodies designed to bind to specific antigens found on the surface of *Streptococcus pyogenes*. If the bacteria are present in sufficient numbers, the antibodies will bind, and a color change will occur, indicating a positive result. RADTs are quick, providing results within minutes, and can be performed in a doctor's office or clinic.

Another method for diagnosing streptococcal infections is a throat culture. This also involves a throat swab, but the sample is sent to a laboratory to be grown on a culture medium. If *Streptococcus pyogenes* is present, it will multiply, allowing for its identification. Throat cultures are considered more accurate than RADTs but take 24 to 48 hours for results. They are often used when an RADT is negative but a strep infection is still suspected, or to confirm a positive RADT. Treatment for strep throat typically involves antibiotics to prevent complications such as rheumatic fever.
