Stratatitled

Etymology and scope. The term blends strata, meaning layers, with titled, indicating that every layer carries its own identifying label. Stratatitled originated in digital archiving and knowledge-management discussions in the early 2020s as a way to address the challenges of tracking revisions, sources, and thematic progression across complex collections.

Mechanism. In a stratatitled system, data are assigned to one or more strata based on criteria such as time period, source, or thematic domain. Each stratum carries a title field and associated metadata describing its purpose, origin, and relationships to other layers. Layers can be nested or linked, enabling hierarchical or networked views. Access permissions and preservation rules can be applied at the stratum level to reflect provenance or sensitivity.

Applications. The approach is used in digital libraries, research archives, and collaborative projects that require clear lineage and context. It supports layered storytelling in digital humanities, where different strata represent stages of curation, translation, or revision, and it aids in search by enabling queries that target specific layers.

Limitations. Implementing stratatitled systems can introduce complexity and require standardized metadata schemas, governance to maintain consistency, and careful planning to avoid over-structuring or brittle inter-layer relationships.
