The objective is to achieve a specified torque to ensure joint integrity and prevent damage to threads or components.

Common types include torque wrenches (mechanical, digital, and preset/click-types), ratchets with torque settings, socket and combination wrenches, adjustable torque screwdrivers, pliers with torque function in some models, and torque multipliers for high-torque applications. In professional use, tool choice depends on required torque range, tolerances, and accessibility of the fastener.

Operation: set the desired torque on the tool, align with the fastener, and apply smooth, continuous force until the tool indicates the set torque has been reached. Use appropriate accessories (bits, sockets) and lubricants if specified. Do not use impact devices for precise torque unless the tool is rated for it. Regularly verify accuracy; calibration may be required by the manufacturer or regulatory standards.

Calibration and maintenance: torque tools require periodic calibration, typically by accredited metrology labs or in-house calibration systems; ISO 6789 describes torque tool classification and tolerances. Store tools clean, dry, and at a stable temperature, with the wrench set to its lowest torque to reduce spring fatigue; avoid impacts, falls, or exposure to extreme heat.

Safety: proper torque prevents joint failure and thread damage; over-tightening can strip threads or break fasteners; under-tightening can cause loosening. Always follow manufacturer specifications and use PPE as needed.
