Storstockholm

Storstockholm, meaning Greater Stockholm, is a metropolitan region in Sweden that encompasses Stockholm Municipality and a group of neighboring municipalities within Stockholm County. The term is used in statistics and regional planning to describe the urban and economic core around the Swedish capital. The definitions vary by agency, but Storstockholm generally includes the central city and its suburbs that are closely linked through commuting, housing markets, and infrastructure.

As of the early 2020s, Storstockholm is home to roughly 2.3–2.5 million residents. The area covers urban and suburban municipalities around the Baltic Sea inlet and is characterized by a mix of dense inner-city districts and suburban residential areas, with extensive transit connections.

The region concentrates Sweden’s national and international business activity, higher education institutions, government offices, and cultural institutions. It has a highly developed transport network, with services operated by Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (SL), including metro, commuter rail, buses, and trams that connect across municipal borders.

Regional planning and governance are conducted by the Stockholm County Administrative Board and related regional bodies, coordinating land use, housing, and transport policies across municipalities. Storstockholm is a focal point of national economic strategy and urban development in Sweden.
