It is best known as the site of the University of Connecticut’s main campus, around which the local community developed. The area originated in the 19th century with the establishment of the Storrs Agricultural School, funded by the Storrs family; the school later evolved into Connecticut Agricultural College, then Connecticut State College, and finally the University of Connecticut in 1939.
