Stopplikt

Stopplikt is a Norwegian term that translates to "duty to stop" or "obligation to stop." It primarily refers to the legal obligation of a driver in Norway to stop their vehicle in certain situations. The most common scenario where stopplikt applies is at a stop sign (stoppskilt). When encountering a stop sign, drivers must come to a complete halt before entering the intersection or crossing the path of other traffic. After stopping, the driver must yield to all other traffic and pedestrians before proceeding.

Beyond stop signs, stopplikt can also be invoked in other circumstances. For example, drivers have a duty to stop if they are involved in an accident, regardless of fault. This includes stopping to provide assistance to anyone injured and to exchange information with other parties involved. Furthermore, if a driver strikes an animal, they are legally obligated to stop, report the incident to the police if necessary, and ensure the animal is not suffering unnecessarily if possible. Failure to adhere to stopplikt can result in fines, penalty points on the driver's license, and in more serious cases, even imprisonment. The underlying principle of stopplikt is to ensure safety on the roads and to uphold responsibilities in the event of unforeseen incidents.
