Stopäänteet

Stopäänteet, known in English as final consonants or coda consonants, refer to consonant sounds that occur at the end of a syllable or word in a language. The presence and nature of stopäänteet can vary significantly across different languages and even dialects. Some languages frequently allow a wide range of consonants to appear in the final position, while others have much stricter rules, often limiting the types of sounds that can end a syllable.

For example, in Finnish, certain consonants are restricted from appearing at the end of a word. The voiceless stops /p/, /t/, and /k/ can appear word-finally, as can the nasals /m/ and /n/, and the liquids /l/ and /r/. However, voiced stops like /b/, /d/, and /g/ generally do not appear word-finally in native Finnish words, often being realized as their voiceless counterparts or being omitted in certain contexts. This phenomenon is a key feature of Finnish phonology.

The concept of stopäänteet is important in phonological analysis and has implications for language acquisition and historical linguistics.
