Stonefilled

Stonefilled refers to a construction technique where the hollow spaces within a wall or structure are filled with stones. This method has been employed historically in various forms of masonry and building. The purpose of stone filling can be multifaceted, contributing to structural integrity, insulation, and even fire resistance.

In the context of older stone buildings, particularly those with double-skinned walls, the interstitial space was often deliberately filled with smaller stones, rubble, or other aggregate materials. This infill would bind the outer and inner faces of the stone wall together, creating a more robust and monolithic structure. The density and quality of the fill could significantly impact the overall strength and durability of the building.

Beyond structural reinforcement, stone filling could also serve as a thermal mass, helping to regulate indoor temperatures by absorbing heat during the day and releasing it slowly at night.
