Stiolto

Stiolto is a small comune located in the province of Carpi in the Emilia‑Romagna region of northern Italy. Covering an area of 18.4 square kilometres, it sits at an elevation of 117 metres above sea level and, according to the most recent census, hosts a population of roughly 3,200 residents. The municipality is positioned approximately 180 kilometres southeast of Bologna and 10 kilometres north of the city of Carpi.

The origins of Stiolto can be traced back to the Lombard era of the 8th century, when a fortified enclosure was established to guard the trade routes that ran through the Apennine foothills. In the Middle Ages the area prospered as a centre for wool production, a trade that continued to shape its economy into the early modern period. The 18th‑century construction of the Church of Saint Mauro, a modest Baroque edifice, marks the most significant surviving example of the town’s architectural heritage.

Stiolto’s economy today is predominantly agricultural, with a focus on the cultivation of rainfed cereal crops and the production of a local semisoft cheese that bears the name “Stiolto.” Small‑scale farms dominate the surrounding landscape, while a handful of artisans specialise in butter and olive‑oil crafts. In recent years the municipality has encouraged agritourism, offering farm‑stay experiences and culinary tours that showcase regional gastronomy.

The town is connected to the surrounding region by Provincial Road 89, which links it to Carpi, and by the nearby A13 motorway, providing convenient access to the national highway network. Public transportation to Carpi and beyond is facilitated by a daily bus service operated by the regional transit company Azienda Trasporti Carpi.

Stiolto’s local administrative centre is the Palazzo Comunale, a 19th‑century building that now houses the city council and a small museum dedicated to the history of the area. The municipal theatre hosts community performances and occasional visiting ensembles, underlining the town’s commitment to preserving its cultural life.
