Steroleitas is a proposed lineage of small marine eukaryotes distinguished largely by a distinctive profile of sterols in their membranes and related lipid metabolism. The group is identified primarily through environmental DNA surveys and targeted lipid analyses, rather than by a widely agreed cellular morphology.

Taxonomic status is unsettled. Steroleitas is not universally recognized as a formal genus in mainstream classifications. Some studies treat Steroleitas as a provisional clade within broader lineages of protists, defined by molecular signatures rather than a complete fossil record or clear morphological characters.

Habitat and distribution: Sequences attributed to Steroleitas have been recovered from coastal and open ocean waters, including oligotrophic regions. The organisms are thought to be predominantly small, planktonic cells, with some evidence of benthic representatives in sediment samples. Their exact geographic range remains under study.

Biology and ecology: Little is known about life cycles. Researchers infer a mixotrophic or photosynthetic metabolism in some members, with growth linked to light and organic nutrients. Membrane composition centers on sterols and related lipids, which may influence membrane fluidity and stress tolerance in varying environments.

Research and significance: Steroleitas has attracted attention for its potential to illuminate sterol biosynthesis pathways in early-diverging eukaryotes and for possible biotechnological applications in sterol production. Cultivation challenges and taxonomic ambiguity currently limit comprehensive study, but advances in single-cell techniques and metagenomics continue to shed light.
