Stereokehitys

Stereokehitys is a term used in developmental psychology and neuroscience to describe the process by which the brain's ability to process stereoscopic vision, or depth perception, develops. This complex ability relies on the brain receiving slightly different images from each eye and integrating them to create a single, three-dimensional representation of the environment.

The development of stereokehitys typically begins in infancy. During the first few months of life, infants' visual systems are still maturing. While they can perceive light and basic shapes, their ability to fuse images from both eyes and accurately judge depth is limited. This period is critical for establishing proper visual pathways and binocular vision.

As a child grows, their visual cortex becomes more refined, and the neural connections responsible for stereoscopic processing strengthen. This maturation process is influenced by visual experience. Exposure to a variety of visual stimuli and opportunities for exploration allows the brain to practice and improve its depth perception capabilities. Certain critical periods exist during early childhood where visual input is particularly important for this development.

If these conditions are not treated early, the brain may not develop the necessary neural circuitry for effective binocular vision, leading to permanent deficits in depth perception.
