Steptestejä

Steptestejä is a Finnish term that translates to "step tests" or "stepping tests." It broadly refers to a variety of physical assessments designed to measure an individual's capacity for aerobic exercise and their ability to recover after a period of exertion. These tests typically involve stepping up and down on a platform of a specific height for a set duration or until a certain number of repetitions are completed.

The most common steptest is the YMCA step test. In this version, participants step up and down on a 12-inch (30.5 cm) bench at a rate of 30 steps per minute for three minutes. Immediately following the exercise, their heart rate is measured at one-minute intervals for a specified recovery period. The recovery heart rate is then used to estimate the individual's cardiovascular fitness level. Higher recovery heart rates generally indicate lower fitness.

Other variations of step tests exist, employing different platform heights, stepping cadences, or durations. The primary purpose of these tests is to provide a simple, accessible, and cost-effective method for evaluating cardiovascular health. They are frequently used in fitness settings, schools, and for general health screenings.
