Stemmingstype

Stemmingstype is a term used in computational linguistics to classify stemming approaches by how they reduce words to their base forms. It emphasizes the trade-offs among speed, accuracy, and linguistic resource requirements. Stemmingstype can be understood along several axes: aggressiveness (how aggressively affixes are removed), the basis of the method (rule-based, dictionary-based, or statistical/learned), and language orientation (language-specific versus language-agnostic).

Rule-based stemmers apply a fixed set of transformation rules to strip inflectional suffixes. They are typically fast and lightweight but can produce over-stemming or under-stemming in some contexts. Classic examples include the Porter stemmer and the Lovins stemmer; Snowball extends these ideas to multiple languages. Dictionary-based stemmers consult an internal lexicon to determine legitimate stems, reducing over-stemming at the cost of requiring language resources. Statistical or learning-based stemmers infer stems from data, potentially handling irregular forms better in morphologically rich languages, but they require annotated corpora or large text collections for training.

Stemmingstype is complementary to lemmatization, which aims for canonical dictionary forms and often uses part-of-speech information and morphological analysis rather than simple affix stripping.

Applications include information retrieval, search engines, and text mining, where reducing word forms to a common stem can improve recall. Evaluation criteria involve rates of over-stemming and under-stemming and their impact on downstream tasks, as well as computational efficiency.
