Stemmetonen

Stemmetonen is a linguistic term used to describe a pattern in which the stem of a word carries a distinctive pitch or tonal value that is independent of inflectional affixes. In languages described as having stemmetonen, tone on the root or stem morpheme can be phonemic, so words with the same stem can differ in meaning depending on the stem’s tone.

Stemmetonen can be of several types. They may be level tones, such as high or low on the stem, or contour tones, where the pitch changes across the stem (for example rising or falling). The stem tone can interact with suffixal tones or be modified by phonological processes during inflection. In some analyses, stem tones are treated as part of the lexical entry, while in others they are considered part of the prosodic phonology of the word. Stem tones can arise independently or as a result of historical sound changes such as tonogenesis or the loss of suffixal tone.
