Stembandtrilling

Stembandtrilling, also known as vocal fold vibration or laryngeal vibration, refers to the rapid opening and closing of the vocal folds in the larynx that produces sound. This process is fundamental to human speech and singing. The vocal folds, a pair of muscular bands located within the larynx, are brought together by muscles. When air is expelled from the lungs, it passes through the constricted vocal folds, causing them to vibrate. This vibration creates a complex waveform that is then modified by the vocal tract (throat, mouth, and nasal passages) to form distinct sounds.

The frequency of this vibration determines the pitch of the voice. Higher frequencies result in higher pitches, while lower frequencies produce lower pitches. The amplitude of the vibration, related to the airflow and the tension of the vocal folds, influences the loudness or intensity of the sound. Various factors can affect stembandtrilling, including muscle tension, lung capacity, and the physical condition of the vocal folds themselves. Issues such as nodules, polyps, or paralysis of the vocal folds can disrupt normal vibration and lead to voice disorders.
