Stateleaning

Stateleaning refers to a phenomenon observed in certain statistical models, particularly those involving hierarchical or mixed-effects structures, where estimates for individual groups or units are pulled towards the overall population average. This effect is more pronounced for groups with less data or higher variance, as the model borrows strength across groups to produce more stable and reliable estimates. The term "stateleaning" suggests that the estimates for individual states (or any defined group) are leaning towards the overall state average.

This process is a consequence of the regularization inherent in these models. Instead of estimating each group's parameter independently, the model considers the relationship between individual group parameters and the global parameter. This shrinkage helps to mitigate the impact of outliers and extreme values that might arise from small sample sizes in individual groups.

Stateleaning is a desirable property when dealing with noisy or sparse data. It leads to estimates that are typically more accurate and less variable than purely independent estimates. However, it can also mean that for groups with very strong, unique characteristics and ample data, the estimate might not fully capture that distinctiveness. Understanding the degree of stateleaning is important for interpreting the results of such models and for making informed decisions based on the estimated parameters.
