Sremac

Sremac is a demonym used in the Serbian language to denote a person from Srem, also known as Syrmia, a historic region in the western part of the Danube basin that spans parts of Serbia and Croatia. The term is formed with the Slavic suffix -ac, a common way to create demonyms from place names. In common usage, Sremac refers to residents of the region rather than to a single ethnic or social group.

Syrmia lies between the Danube to the north and east and the Sava river to the south, with the northern portion in Serbia's Vojvodina and the western portion in Croatia's Slavonia. The Serbian portion includes the Srem District with towns such as Sremska Mitrovica, Ruma, Inđija, Šid, Irig, and Pećinci. The Croatian portion lies in Vukovar-Srijem County and includes cities such as Vukovar and Vinkovci. The region is characterized by flat to gently rolling plains, fertile agricultural land, and extensive riverine landscapes; it has long been an important agricultural and trade corridor.

Historically, Syrmia has been a crossroads of empires and cultures, with Roman, Byzantine, Hungarian, Ottoman, and Habsburg influences shaping its population and architecture. In modern times, the region is divided between Serbia and Croatia, with Srem constituting the Serbian portion of Syrmia and contributing to the cultural and economic profile of Vojvodina.
