Squamaepiteeli

Squamaepiteeli, also known as squamous epithelium, is a type of tissue found in many parts of the body. It is characterized by its flattened, scale-like cells, which are thin and irregular in shape. This structure allows for efficient diffusion and protection.

Squamous epithelium can be found lining surfaces where rapid transport of substances is important, such as in the alveoli of the lungs, where oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange occurs. It also forms the outer layer of the skin, providing a protective barrier against the environment. The lining of blood vessels, known as endothelium, is also composed of simple squamous epithelium.

There are different types of squamous epithelium. Simple squamous epithelium consists of a single layer of these flattened cells. This type is ideal for filtration and diffusion. Stratified squamous epithelium, on the other hand, is made up of multiple layers of squamous cells. This provides greater protection and is found in areas subjected to abrasion, like the esophagus and the outer layer of the skin.

In some areas, the squamous cells can be specialized. For example, keratinized stratified squamous epithelium, found in the skin, contains keratin, a tough protein that adds durability and waterproofing. Non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium, found in the mouth and vagina, is kept moist and is less resistant to abrasion. The presence and function of squamaepiteeli are vital for numerous physiological processes.
