The primary advantage of split-phase systems is their ability to supply both standard 120-volt appliances and higher-power 240-volt appliances, such as electric dryers, ovens, and water heaters, from a single service entrance. This dual voltage capability makes them a cost-effective solution for many buildings. Installation involves a 240-volt breaker that is actually two single-pole 120-volt breakers linked together, allowing simultaneous connection to both hot wires of the split-phase system.
