Splitbeams

Splitbeams are a type of transducer used in sonar systems, particularly in fishfinders. They are characterized by having two distinct sound beams emitted from a single transducer element, or two closely spaced elements. These beams are typically angled outwards from each other, creating a wider coverage area below the boat.

The divergence of the two beams allows for a broader view of the underwater environment, increasing the chances of detecting fish or other objects that might be missed by a single, narrower beam. This wider coverage is especially useful when the boat is stationary or moving slowly. The splitbeam design can also provide some directional information, helping to ascertain the general location of a target within the coverage area.

In fishfinding applications, splitbeams can enhance the ability to distinguish between individual fish in a school and can provide more information about the size and density of fish aggregations.
