Spiralfräser

Spiralfräser, also known as a helical mill or spiral end mill, is a type of milling cutter distinguished by its helical flutes. These flutes are set at an angle to the cutter's axis, creating a continuous, cutting edge that spirals around the tool. This design offers several advantages over straight-fluted cutters. The helical shape allows for a smoother, more continuous chip removal, which reduces cutting forces and vibration. This results in a better surface finish on the workpiece and can increase tool life.

Spiralfräser are used in a wide variety of machining operations, including slotting, profiling, pocketing, and general milling. They are particularly effective in materials that are prone to vibration or when high-quality surface finishes are required. The helix angle can vary, with steeper angles generally providing a smoother cut but potentially generating more axial thrust. Conversely, shallower helix angles may be better suited for materials that require higher chip loads.

The geometry of spiralfräser also influences their performance. The number of flutes, flute depth, and the presence of chip breakers are all important design considerations. Tools with more flutes generally offer better stability and surface finish but have smaller chip gullets, limiting their material removal rate. Spiralfräser can be made from various materials, including high-speed steel (HSS) and solid carbide, with carbide being preferred for its hardness and ability to withstand higher cutting speeds and temperatures. They are essential tools in modern subtractive manufacturing.
