Sphagnumdominantie
Sphagnumdominantie refers to an ecological state in peatlands where species of the genus Sphagnum, commonly known as peat mosses, are the dominant ground cover. These mosses are highly adapted to waterlogged and acidic conditions, which they actively create and maintain. Their unique cellular structure allows them to absorb and retain large quantities of water, often many times their dry weight. This water retention contributes to the anaerobic (oxygen-poor) environment characteristic of bogs.
The presence of Sphagnum also significantly lowers the pH of the substrate due to the release of
