Spermatology is the scientific study of spermatozoa, commonly known as sperm cells. It is a specialized branch of andrology and reproductive biology that focuses on the morphology, physiology, biochemistry, and function of sperm. This field investigates the entire process of sperm development, maturation, and their role in fertilization.

Key areas of study within spermatology include spermatogenesis, the process by which sperm cells are produced in the testes. Researchers examine the stages of spermatogenesis, the cellular mechanisms involved, and the hormonal regulation that governs it. They also study spermiogenesis, the final stage of spermatogenesis where the immature spermatid transforms into a mature spermatozoon.

Spermatology also delves into sperm motility, the ability of sperm to move, which is crucial for their journey through the female reproductive tract to reach and fertilize an egg. The structure of the sperm, including its head, midpiece, and tail, is analyzed to understand how each part contributes to its function.
