SovietEstonian refers to the Estonian people and culture during the period of Soviet rule, which lasted from 1940 to 1991. The Soviet Union annexed Estonia in 1940, following the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, and the country was incorporated into the Soviet Union in 1944. During this time, Estonia was part of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic (ESSR), one of the republics that made up the Soviet Union.

The Soviet rule brought about rapid industrialization and modernization, but it also led to the suppression of Estonian language, culture, and national identity. The Estonian language was officially suppressed, and its use was discouraged. The Soviet government implemented policies aimed at Russification, including the forced relocation of Estonians to other parts of the Soviet Union and the settlement of Russians in Estonia. This led to a significant demographic shift, with the Russian population increasing from 15% to over 30% of the total population.

Culturally, the Soviet period saw the establishment of Soviet-style institutions and the promotion of Soviet values. The Estonian SSR had its own government, but it was subordinate to the central Soviet government. The Soviet Union's influence was pervasive, affecting education, media, and arts. Despite these challenges, the Estonian people maintained their cultural identity through underground activities, such as the publication of samizdat literature and the preservation of Estonian language and traditions.

The Soviet rule in Estonia ended with the restoration of independence in 1991, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The period of Soviet rule left a lasting impact on Estonian society, shaping its political, economic, and cultural landscape.
