It divides the unsorted list into n sublists, each containing one element (a list of one element is considered sorted), and then repeatedly merges sublists to produce new sorted sublists until there is only one sublist remaining. Merge sort has a time complexity of O(n log n) in all cases.

The choice of sorting function depends on the specific requirements of the task at hand, including the size of the list, the nature of the data, and the desired time complexity. Understanding the characteristics of different sorting algorithms is crucial for selecting the most appropriate one for a given situation.
