Soojustuse

Soojustuse is a term used in Estonian construction to describe the practice and system of insulating a building to resist heat flow. It encompasses design, selection of materials, and installation, with the aim of improving energy efficiency, thermal comfort, and reducing heating and cooling demands. Soojustuse can apply to walls, roofs, floors, and foundations, and may be part of broader building envelope strategy.

Common insulation materials include mineral wool, fiberglass, and various foamed plastics such as XPS, EPS, and polyurethane, as well as natural fibers like cellulose or wool. Insulation is installed as bulk insulation, rigid boards, or spray foams, often combined with vapor retarders and airtightness measures to control moisture and drafts.

Performance is evaluated using thermal resistance (R-value) or thermal transmittance (U-value), with standards varying by country. In Europe, U-values and energy performance certificates are used to compare buildings. Proper installation is crucial to prevent gaps, compression, or moisture accumulation, which can reduce effectiveness and promote condensation or mold growth.

Soojustuse is a central element in modernization of existing buildings and in new construction, particularly in climates with cold or mixed conditions. It supports energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and long-term operating costs, while requiring attention to climate, materials, ventilation, and ongoing maintenance.
