Soojusjuhitus

Soojusjuhitus, also known as heat conduction, is a fundamental mode of heat transfer that occurs in solids, liquids, and gases. It is the process by which thermal energy is transferred from a region of higher temperature to a region of lower temperature through direct contact of particles. Unlike convection, which involves the bulk movement of fluids, or radiation, which involves electromagnetic waves, soojusjuhitus relies on the vibrations and collisions of atoms and molecules.

In solids, soojusjuhitus primarily occurs through lattice vibrations. Atoms within the solid are constantly vibrating around their equilibrium positions. When one part of the solid is heated, its atoms vibrate more intensely. These vibrations are then transmitted to neighboring atoms through interatomic forces, causing them to vibrate as well. This chain reaction of vibrations propagates thermal energy through the material. In metals, free electrons also play a significant role in soojusjuhitus, as they can move through the lattice and carry kinetic energy from hotter regions to cooler regions, making metals generally good conductors of heat.

In liquids and gases, soojusjuhitus occurs through molecular collisions. Molecules in these substances are in constant random motion. When a region is heated, the molecules in that region gain kinetic energy and move faster. As these faster-moving molecules collide with slower-moving molecules in cooler regions, they transfer some of their energy, leading to heat transfer. However, because the molecules in liquids and gases are farther apart and move more freely than in solids, soojusjuhitus is generally less efficient in fluids compared to solids. The effectiveness of soojusjuhitus in a material is quantified by its thermal conductivity.
