Solukoristeinen

Solukoristeinen is a Finnish term that describes patterns or textures decorated with cell-like motifs. The word combines solu, meaning cell, with koristeinen, meaning ornamented, and is used in design criticism to refer to surfaces that evoke the structure of biological cells. It is primarily found in discussions of visual arts, architecture, textiles, and graphic design, rather than in biological nomenclature.

In practice, solukoristeinen describes a cellular or lattice aesthetic characterized by repeating polygonal compartments—often hexagonal, but also irregular cell shapes—that create a sense of organic subdivision. The motif can appear as perforated screens, tessellated tiling, lace-like or hollowed surfaces, or printed and woven patterns that resemble a honeycomb or cellular network.

Usage and examples: In architecture, facades or interior screens featuring cellular lattices; in ceramics and tilework, honeycomb-inspired textures; in fabrics and prints, repeating cellular motifs; in digital art, procedural patterns based on cellular-like tessellations.
