Sokeritestit, in Finnish usage, refer to tests that detect or quantify sugars in a sample. They are used in chemistry, biochemistry, the food industry, agriculture, education, and clinical laboratories to identify carbohydrate content, differentiate sugar types, or determine concentration.

Common qualitative tests include Benedict’s test and Fehling’s test, which detect reducing sugars by color change or precipitation. Barfoed’s test helps distinguish mono- from disaccharides by reaction rate, while the Molisch test provides a general indication of carbohydrates through a characteristic color reaction. Enzymatic assays, such as glucose oxidase-based tests, are widely used for specific sugar quantification in both research and clinical settings.

Quantitative approaches range from refractometry (Brix) for estimating total sugar content in liquids like juice or syrup, to chromatographic methods (HPLC) and enzymatic assays that provide precise concentrations of individual sugars. In clinical contexts, blood glucose measurements and oral glucose tolerance tests assess metabolic handling of sugar.

Applications include quality control in food production, fermentation monitoring, and product development, as well as diagnostic testing and monitoring of metabolic conditions in medicine. Sample matrices can vary from beverages and foods to plant extracts and bodily fluids, and the choice of method depends on the desired specificity, sensitivity, and available equipment.

Interpretation of results depends on the method and potential interferences. Qualitative tests indicate the presence of sugars but may require confirmatory tests; quantitative methods yield numerical concentrations but can be affected by other reducing agents or sample matrix effects. Safety considerations involve handling of reagents and proper disposal in laboratory settings.
