Soitillossa is a Finnish term that can be translated to "in play" or "in session" and primarily refers to the state of a musical instrument being actively played or used. It can also extend to refer to a situation where a game or a performance is currently underway.

The core meaning of soitillossa relates to the active use of a musical instrument. When a piano is in its stand, not being played, it is not in soitillossa. However, when a musician sits down and begins to play, the piano is then considered to be in soitillossa. This concept applies to all types of musical instruments, from guitars and violins to drums and electronic keyboards. It signifies that the instrument is currently producing sound or is ready to do so as part of a musical activity.

Beyond music, the term can be used more broadly. For instance, a board game that has been set up and is being played is in soitillossa. Similarly, a theatrical performance or a sporting event that is in progress can be described as being in soitillossa.
