Sociolingvistikához is the Hungarian term for sociolinguistics. Sociolinguistics is a field of linguistics that studies the relationship between language and society. It explores how social factors, such as social class, ethnicity, gender, age, and geographic location, influence language use and how language, in turn, shapes social structures and identities.

This discipline examines variations in language, known as linguistic variation, and how these variations are distributed within a speech community. Sociolinguists analyze dialects, accents, and the use of different registers or styles of speech depending on the context and participants. They are interested in the social meaning attached to these variations and how they can signal social status, group membership, or personal identity.

Key areas of study within sociolinguistics include language variation and change, language attitudes, language and ethnicity, language and gender, bilingualism and multilingualism, and language planning and policy. Sociolinguistics often employs quantitative methods, such as collecting and analyzing large amounts of speech data, as well as qualitative methods, like ethnographic observation and interviews, to understand the complex interplay between language and its social environment. The goal is to understand how language functions in real-world social contexts.
