The Snrlayans are a sapient, bipedal species native to the archipelago world of Selara. They inhabit coastal and island ecosystems across the Selaran archipelago and maintain a pan-island culture within a federated network of settlements. The name Snrlayan derives from the ancient Snari word for light and reflects their bioluminescent signaling patterns.

Biology and sensory traits: Snrlayans range from 1.6 to 1.9 meters in height. Their skin exhibits variable bioluminescent patterns that can intensify during social interaction and signaling. They have a highly developed nervous system and rely on triadic social signaling—vocal, tactile, and luminescent. They are terrestrial but adept swimmers and can remain submerged for short periods using efficient oxygen uptake in the lungs.

Society and culture: Social organization is a confederation of island-clans under the Council of Tides, a deliberative body that balances resource use and education. Education emphasizes ecology, engineering, and philosophy.
