Smittekjeden, translated to "chain of infection" in English, refers to the sequence of events that must occur for an infectious disease to be transmitted from one host to another. Understanding the smittekjeden is crucial for public health efforts aimed at preventing and controlling the spread of diseases. There are typically six key components to this chain.

The first component is the infectious agent itself, which can be a bacterium, virus, fungus, or parasite. The second is the reservoir, the place where the infectious agent normally lives and multiplies, such as in humans, animals, or the environment. The third element is the portal of exit, the way the infectious agent leaves the reservoir, such as through respiratory secretions, feces, or bodily fluids.

The fourth link is the mode of transmission, the method by which the infectious agent travels from the reservoir to a susceptible host. This can be direct, such as through person-to-person contact, or indirect, via contaminated objects, food, water, or vectors like insects. The fifth component is the portal of entry, how the infectious agent enters the susceptible host, often through mucous membranes or breaks in the skin.

Finally, the sixth link is the susceptible host, an individual who is not immune to the infectious agent and is therefore at risk of infection. Breaking any one of these links in the smittekjeden can prevent the spread of disease.
