Smakförvrängningar, or taste distortions, refer to a condition where a person's sense of taste is altered, leading to the perception of tastes that are not actually present or a change in the intensity or quality of existing tastes. This can manifest in various ways, such as experiencing a metallic, bitter, or salty taste in the mouth even when nothing is being consumed. The opposite phenomenon, where existing tastes are perceived as different or absent, can also occur.

Several factors can cause taste distortions. These include certain medical conditions such as infections of the respiratory tract, neurological disorders like Bell's palsy or head injuries, and hormonal changes associated with pregnancy or menopause. Nutritional deficiencies, particularly of zinc or vitamin B12, have also been linked to taste disturbances. Furthermore, medical treatments like chemotherapy and radiation therapy, as well as certain medications, can significantly impact taste perception as a side effect. Poor oral hygiene, gum disease, and smoking are also contributing factors.

The impact of taste distortions can range from mild annoyance to significant distress, affecting a person's appetite and leading to nutritional problems. A diminished sense of taste can reduce the enjoyment of food, potentially causing weight loss, while an altered or unpleasant taste can lead to food aversion. Diagnosis typically involves a medical history review, an examination of the oral cavity, and sometimes specific taste tests. Treatment strategies depend on the underlying cause and may involve addressing the primary condition, adjusting medications, or recommending nutritional supplements. In some cases, such as those related to aging or certain neurological conditions, taste distortions may be persistent.
