Slån

Slån, also known by its scientific name Prunus spinosa, is a deciduous shrub native to Europe, western Asia, and northwestern Africa. It is a member of the Rosaceae family, which also includes roses, apples, and cherries. Slån is characterized by its thorny branches, small white flowers that bloom in early spring before the leaves appear, and dark blue, plum-like fruits called sloes. These fruits are very astringent when raw and are typically harvested after the first frost, which sweetens them slightly.

The plant is often found in hedgerows, scrubland, and on the edges of woodlands. Its dense, thorny structure makes it an effective barrier, and it provides shelter and food for a variety of wildlife, including birds and insects. The flowers are an important early nectar source for bees.

Historically, slån has been utilized for various purposes. The fruits have been used to make jams, jellies, and alcoholic beverages, most notably sloe gin.
