Skärtorsdag

Skärtorsdag is the Thursday before Easter Sunday and is part of Holy Week. The name "skärtorsdag" in Swedish is believed to derive from the Old Norse word "skíra," meaning to cleanse or purify. This refers to the tradition of washing feet, symbolizing spiritual cleansing, a practice observed by Jesus with his disciples on this day. Another interpretation suggests that "skär" could be related to "skära," meaning to cut, possibly referencing the practice of cutting or shaving on this day.

In many Swedish traditions, Skärtorsdag is associated with witches. Folklore suggests that on this night, witches would fly to Blåkulla on their brooms. Children often dress up as "påskkärringar" (Easter witches) and go door-to-door asking for treats, similar to Halloween customs. Historically, this day was also a time for confession and receiving communion, marking a period of spiritual preparation for Easter. It is a public holiday in Sweden, with many businesses and schools closed. The day is often spent with family, and traditional foods may include eel, pea soup, and pancakes.
