Skolithotype

Skolithotype refers to a fossil preservation method where the original shape and structure of the organism is preserved as a cavity or impression in the surrounding rock.

This type of preservation occurs when the organism is rapidly buried, preventing scavengers and weathering agents from disturbing its remains. The rock surrounding the organism then intervenes into the void left by the deceased organism, preserving the original shape and structure.

Skolithotypes often involve the use of pyrite, an abundant mineral that can replace original organic material. The replacement process typically occurs in the absence of oxygen, allowing for the formation of a detailed impression of the abandoned organism.

Visualization of the inhabitant organism from its fossils can provide information about its size, shape, and movement patterns. Classification of organisms found in skolithotypes is also possible. Fossils of organisms with well-preserved structural forms and textures are exposed for detailed examination.
