The optimal cutting speed depends on several factors, including the type of material being cut, the geometry of the cutting tool, and the desired finish of the cut.

In metalworking, cutting speeds are typically measured in surface feet per minute (SFM). For example, a high-speed steel (HSS) drill bit cutting mild steel might have an optimal cutting speed of around 100-150 SFM. This speed allows for efficient material removal while minimizing the risk of tool breakage or excessive heat generation.

In woodworking, cutting speeds are often measured in feet per minute (FPM). The optimal cutting speed for a given wood species and tool type can vary significantly. For instance, a circular saw cutting pine might have an optimal speed of around 2,500-3,000 FPM, while the same saw cutting oak might require a speed of around 1,500-2,000 FPM.

Increasing the cutting speed can lead to faster material removal, but it also increases the risk of tool breakage and heat generation. Conversely, decreasing the cutting speed can improve tool life and reduce heat, but it also slows down the cutting process.
