Skjálfta
Skjálfta is an Icelandic word that translates to "earthquake" in English. It refers to the shaking of the Earth's surface caused by a sudden release of energy in the Earth's lithosphere, typically due to the movement of tectonic plates. Iceland, situated on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge where the North American and Eurasian plates are pulling apart, is one of the most seismically active regions in the world. As a result, earthquakes are a common occurrence in Iceland.
These seismic events in Iceland can range from very small, imperceptible tremors to large and destructive earthquakes.
