Skjermingsgass

Skjermingsgass, also known as shielding gas, is a gas or gas mixture used to prevent oxidation and contamination of molten metal during welding and cutting processes. It is particularly important in welding techniques such as Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), and Plasma Arc Cutting (PAC). The primary function of skjermingsgass is to create an inert or semi-inert atmosphere around the weld area, which helps to protect the molten metal from atmospheric gases like oxygen and nitrogen. This protection is crucial for maintaining the integrity and quality of the weld, as these gases can cause defects such as porosity and reduced strength.

Commonly used shielding gases include argon, helium, carbon dioxide, and mixtures of these gases. Argon is widely used due to its ability to form a stable, inert atmosphere that prevents oxidation.
