Key mechanisms of skinprotective products include occlusion and hydration to reduce water loss, lipid replenishment to restore the skin’s barrier, photoprotection against ultraviolet radiation, and physical or chemical barriers that limit irritant exposure. Common forms include barrier creams and ointments, emollients and moisturizers, sunscreens, protective gloves and clothing, and barrier films or sprays used in occupational settings.

Typical applications span consumer skincare for dry or sensitive skin, dermatologic care to support barrier repair in dermatitis, and occupational safety for workers exposed to irritants, solvents, or cold and wind. Sun protection products are a major subset, providing UV filtration to reduce photoaging and sunburn risk.

Safety and regulation vary by jurisdiction. Many skinprotective products are regulated as cosmetics, drugs, or medical devices, with labeling, ingredient disclosures, and safety testing requirements.
